CLEARWATER, FL. (THECOUNT) — The man who deputies say shot and killed Markeis McGlockton over a Clearwater parking spot last month is now facing manslaughter charges.
On Monday, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office announced the State Attorney had finished reviewing the case and decided to charge Michael Drejka with manslaughter.
Deputies arrested Drejka Monday morning. He is now being booked into the Pinellas County Jail. Bond has been set at $100,000.
“I support the State Attorney’s decision and will have no further comment as the case continues to work its way through the criminal justice system,” Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said in a statement. source
Markeis McGlockton has been identified as the Clearwater man shot and killed following an argument over a parking space.
McGlockton, whose age was not provided, was visiting a Clearwater convenience store with his girlfriend and his 5-year-old son when an argument over a parking spot erupted in gunfire.
Sgt. Spencer Gross of the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office says, Michael Drejka confronted a woman whom he believed parked in a handicapped parking space outside the Circle A Food Store on Sunset Point Road.
McGlockton was inside the store buying his little boy a candy bar, according to the store owner.
When McGlockton exited the store, he observed the confrontation between his girlfriend and Drejka, and attempted to intervene.
Drejka responded by taking out a pistol and shooting McGlockton in the chest. McGlockton ran back into the store where his five-year-old son was standing at the front door, watching the entire incident happen right before his eyes. McGlockton fell to the ground inside of the store and he was pronounced dead at a local hospital. source
Drejka is a legal concealed weapons permit holder and may not be charged because of Florida’s Stand Your Ground law, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.
Drejka has a history of assaulting people in the very parking lot the shooting took place, the store owner told local reporters.
