The Franklin County deputy corner has announced that former NASCAR driver James Hylton and his son were killed in a violent car crash Saturday morning.
Hylton and his son were passengers in a vehicle hauling a race trailer at the time of the double fatal crash.
The crash occurred on I-85 northbound near exit 164 in Franklin County North Carolina.
The crash is under investigation.
At the age of 79, Hylton became the oldest driver to race in each of NASCAR’s three highest divisions.
A Veteran of 601 Races, Hylton was the 1966 NASCAR Rookie of the Year, had 301 Top 10s and finished in the top 5 in points eight times (3 2nds, 4 3rds, and a 4th), but only two wins in his career mean he doesn’t have enough to get off the alternate’s list and into the field.
Fans have long called for him to be inducted into the NASCAR Hall Of Fame.
