A reserve non-salaried Zachary Police officer is dead after being run over in a shopping center parking lot Monday evening.
Albert Franklin, 33, is charged with first-degree murder, hit and run, damage to property, and fugitive from Zachary Police Department. Ashley Chaney, 30, is charged with obstruction of justice, over the deadly incident.
Officers were working a drug investigation when two officers tried to make contact with a person driving a box truck. As the suspect tried to drive away, the reserve officer was pinned between the truck and grocery cart equipment. As the suspect continued to drive away, the officer was run over and killed. source
The officer has not been identified, but authorities said the man was a reserve officer for the Zachary Police Department and a full-time firefighter for the city of Zachary.
“He was pronounced dead… at the scene,” a visibly shaken Sheriff Sid Gautreaux said in a late-night news conference Monday.
The following is from the Zachary Police Department on the subject of “Reserve Officers Program.”
The Zachary Reserve Police Program has been assisting and serving the Zachary residents for many years. The Zachary Reserve Police Program is comprised of individuals from all professions and all walks of life. This group contributes thousands of hours each year to promote the safety and security of the residents of Zachary.
Our Reserve Officers are part time, non-salaried, fully-commissioned law enforcement officers. Reserve Officers have some of the same responsibilities, the same duties, and receive the same level of training and have the same authority as a Full Time Regular Zachary Police Officer. Opportunities exist within the Reserve Officer organization for individuals to serve in all areas of law enforcement.
A number of our former Reserve Officers have gone on to positions of leadership in the law enforcement community, both in Zachary and other agencies within the state. Being a part of this tradition is the opportunity to truly make a difference in the community.
