aljazeera is reporting a shallow tremor with a 5.6 magnitude has struck North Korea, said the US Geological Survey (USGS).
The alert on Sunday said the tremor was 10km deep and came after claims by Pyongyang that the North has developed a more advanced nuclear weapon that has “great destructive power.”
Previous recent tremors in North Korea have been caused by nuclear tests.
South Korea’s Yonhap news agency said the North may have conducted a nuclear test.
Yonhap also reported that the the earthquake which appeared to be manmade took place in Kilju county where the North’s nuclear test site is located.
In slight contrast to the USGS statement, China’s Earthquake Administration said it detected a 6.3 magnitude earthquake in North Korea that was a “suspected explosion”.
The administration said in a statement on its website that the quake, which occurred around 11:30 am (03:30 GMT), was recorded at a depth of zero kilometres.
