The Southaven district attorney is saying police who shot and killed a man and his dog may have responded to the wrong address.
Law enforcement in Tate County were responding to a call of a domestic assault of a woman in the 5800 block of Surrey Lane in Southaven, Mississippi, when the fatal shooting of Ismael Lopez occurred.
Tate County police say when they arrived a pitbull darted from the residence. After shooting the dog dead, police gained access to the home where they then shot Lopez dead.
Officers say Lopez was holding a gun and after ignoring commands to drop the weapon, they fired the fatal shots.
Officials say a gun was recovered at the scene, however, Lopez’s wife, who was at the residence at the time of the shooting, said she never saw a gun near him. She also said she never heard the police officers identify themselves.
Lopez’s wife said she heard gunfire and ran to the front of the home to discover the walls riddled with bullet holes and her husband on the ground dying from a gunshot wound. She later located the family dog dead in the front of the home.
The Southaven district attorney made clear Lopez was not wanted for anything: “The deceased subject absolutely had no warrant out for his arrest. He was not wanted for anything at all. I want to make that abundantly clear at this point so as to not — I don’t want there to be any speculation or disparagement of him by any shape, form or fashion.”
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is looking into the shooting. We are working to learn more about the investigation.
