Ryan Burkhardt, the man convicted of 2016 shooting an undercover cop in Grand Bay, was found dead in his jail cell of an apparent suicide Thursday night.
Official at the Mobile County Metro Jail confirmed Burkhardt, 32, had died and that a death investigation had been opened.
Preliminary reports say there appears to be no foul play involved.
Mobile Police said Burkhardt, 32, shot an undercover police officer in Grand Bay during a sting operation in April 2016. On his way to Metro Jail, he apologized to the undercover officer. “I apologize to the officer and the officer’s family,” Burkhardt said. source
A sentencing hearing against Burkhardt was scheduled for July 27.
