Colorado Springs police have arrested, Monica Abeyta, the mother of a 3-year-old who shot a 2-year-old sibling on Saturday. The shooting was reportedly a tragic accident.
Abeyta, 30, was arrested for felony Child Abuse resulting in serious bodily injury, police said. She is the mother of both boys.
Investigators interviewed several family members. Police believe a 3-year-old toddler in the home got a hold of a gun, was playing with it, and fired at the 2-year-old.
The toddler was rushed to the hospital where he is being treated for his injuries. He was in critical but stable condition on Saturday, but his condition has been upgraded to serious but stable condition on Sunday.
“I just don’t want people to put a bad look on her because of what happened,” neighbor to the family Alazia Gray said. “Because that’s not the type of parent she is. She is a very, very loving parent. Her kids are very, very well taken care of.”
The shooting happened just before 1:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon on the 4300 block of Driftwood Dr. in Northeast Colorado Springs, police said.
