These pictures of young trans girl, Cory Maison, have sparked a debate on social media after photographer, Meg Bitton, posted them online claiming to raise awareness of transgender issues.
Bitton posted her image of the teenager to protest the controversial laws in North Carolina.
The new law says that people must use the bathroom that corresponds to the gender on their birth certificate. Corey, from Detroit, Michigan, was born a boy but suffered bullying throughout childhood after being ‘overly feminine’, BuzzFeed reported last year. At the age of 11, Corey realised she identified as a female. Last year a video of the 14-year-old went viral after mum Erica filmed her surprise reaction to being given the hormones she had desperately wanted for two years. Now photographer Bitton has stirred up a debate surrounding the teen and the issues facing the transgender community as a whole. She posted an image of Corey to Facebook along with the caption: “If this was YOUR daughter, would you be comfortable sending her into a men’s bathroom? Neither would I. Be fair. Be kind. Be empathetic. Treat others how you would like to be treated.” h/t mirror
The photograph garnered thousands of shares and sparked a fierce debate on the internet.
