Melissa Gilbert, who played Laura Ingalls on popular TV series, “Little House on the Prairie, failed to pay more than $360,000 in federal income taxes, claims the IRS.
Gilbert says she blames her tax debt on a stalled acting career, the economy and divorce, in a statement she made to members of the press, “like so many people across the nation, the recession hit me hard” and there was a “perfect storm of financial difficulty for me.”
IRS officials filed the tax lien in February, but details emerged recently after Gilbert announced that her family was moving from a rented home near downtown Howell to another area home.
Gilbert says she has made arrangements with the IRS to pay-off the massive debt.
