Actress and singer Bette Midler’s pet project, banning all plastic grocery bags in California, came to a screeching stop after a last-minute plea by a LA lawmaker.
A star-studded lobbying effort crashed and burned after state Sen. Kevin de Leon, stood up and told fellow lawmakers that the ban could put up to 500 immigrant women out of work in his district.
‘Plastic bags are a scourge to the planet and everything that tries to live on it,’ she said,
‘Shame on them all for caving.’
‘I’ve been bombarded by phone calls by folks who live in Malibu and stars who live in Hollywood,’ de Leon told the Times. But his constituents, he said – along with their jobs in plastics factories – had to come first.
It’s kind of a hard call to make when the ban means folks will be losing their jobs.. Especially a bunch of our sisters.. But let’s face it, nothing is going to change until people stop using the bags and start taking your own bags like I’ve been doing lately.
