CHULA VISTA — The destruction of a massive Chula Vista bayfront icon was over in seconds Saturday morning, leaving a magnificent pile of twisted metal.

People began arriving at Marina View Park as early as 4 a.m. for the implosion of the hulking 165-foot South Bay Power Plant. By go time, more than 1,000 onlookers were there for what most described as a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Banners waved and music filled the air at the public viewing hosted by the Port of San Diego as spectators, ranging from bikers to grandparents, held their cameras at the ready. source
