Tragedy has struck the family of NBA star, Dwyane Wade, after his 32-year-old cousin, Nykea Aldridge, was killed in the South Side area of Chicago. Friday afternoon Aldridge was caught in the crossfire of a shootout between at least three gunmen. She was reportedly pushing a baby stroller when she was shot and killed. Police say, a person of interest was taken into custody.

Wade, along with fellow NBA elite players, Chris Paul, Carmelo Anthony, and LeBron James, have all been outspoken proponents for gun control legislation. The baller delivered the Democratic message at the ESPYs earlier this summer calling for stricter gun control legislation.

Now, that same violence he’s been decrying has struck his own family. According to ESPN.com, Wade’s 32-year-old cousin, Nykea Aldridge, was killed in the South Side area of Chicago on Friday afternoon as she was caught in the crossfire of a shootout between at least three gunmen.

Wade took to Twitter not long after the news broke. Wade, of course, is moving back to his hometown Chicago after signing a free agent deal with the Bulls last month. He and his mother, Jolinda, recently took part in a panel discussion at a South Side YMCA hosted by “The Undefeated” on the very topic of gun violence in America. Here’s what she had to say, via ESPN.com: “Just sat up on a panel yesterday, The Undefeated, talking about the violence that’s going on within our city of Chicago, never knowing that the next day we would be the ones that would be actually living and experiencing it,” she said. h/t uproxx

According to a report, police have at least one of the alleged shooters in custody. The report also said Aldridge was pushing one of her four children in a baby stroller at the time, and that her children are now with relatives.
