MILLRIFT, PA. (THECOUNT) — Kevin Bleyer, a four-time Primetime Emmy Award-winning writer best known for his nine years on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, died Sunday, October 25, in a car crash on a rural road in Millrift, Pike County, Pennsylvania, near his country home. He was 54. His wife, Nella Vera, announced his death in an emotional tribute.
“I am devastated, heartbroken, shattered,” Vera wrote in a social media post announcing the loss. She described Bleyer as her soulmate and partner in crime, remembering their life together as one filled with love, laughter, dogs and travel.

Bleyer spent nine years writing for The Daily Show during Stewart’s tenure, earning four Primetime Emmy Awards for his work on the satirical news program. His career also included eight years writing for Politically Incorrect, the political comedy show associated with Bill Maher and Dennis Miller.
Beyond late-night television, Bleyer was an accomplished speechwriter, author and producer whose work reached audiences in entertainment, politics and international media. He wrote material for former President Barack Obama, including speeches for the White House Correspondents’ Association dinners, and served as a speechwriter for former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.
His awards included a Peabody Award and a Writers Guild Award in addition to his four Emmys. He also co-wrote Earth (The Book), a satirical guide to humanity created with Stewart and other Daily Show contributors, and authored Me the People: One Man’s Selfless Quest to Rewrite the Constitution of the United States of America.
Bleyer graduated from Stanford University and worked across several television and news organizations. His credits included NBC’s TODAY show, CNN and other television projects. He also served as a supervising producer for MSNBC’s Ronan Farrow Daily and worked on scripted programs including The Right Stuff and Sleepy Hollow.
His work extended well beyond the United States. In 2013, Bleyer moved to Kyrgyzstan, where he executive-produced Studio 7, described as the first political satire news program in Central Asia. He later helped develop civic-minded media initiatives in countries including Kenya, Jordan and Moldova, using comedy and journalism to encourage public engagement.
Vera said she first met Bleyer in 2010 at a production of Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson at New York’s Public Theater. They quickly bonded over their shared interest in political comedy and began dating in 2015. The couple married in June 2025.
In her tribute, Vera reflected on his intellect, wit, adventurous spirit and loving nature. Although Bleyer had many public accomplishments, she emphasized that his greatest importance to her was personal. She described him as the person who made life more fun and said his loss had left a permanent hole in her heart.
Vera encouraged people wishing to honor Bleyer’s memory to donate to the Alzheimer’s Association’s New York City chapter, where she said he had volunteered. She also remembered his love of animals and travel as part of the life they shared.
Reports said Bleyer was driving when the crash occurred on a rural road in Millrift. No one else was reported injured. Authorities had not publicly released further details about the circumstances of the collision in the initial reports.
The crash occurred in Millrift, a rural community in Pike County in northeastern Pennsylvania’s Upper Delaware River region, near the New York state line and within the broader Pocono Mountains area.
