WICHITA, KS. (THECOUNT) — Devin Grant, 27, has been identified as the woman investigators believe killed her mother, Patricia Grant, and two cats, before dying in a high-speed crash Thursday morning in the Wichita metropolitan area.

The Wichita Police Department and Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the deaths as an apparent murder-suicide. Authorities say the investigation began with a fatal single-vehicle crash and led deputies to a home where Patricia, 52, was found dead from multiple stab wounds.

Grant was trapped inside the vehicle, which had left the roadway and struck concrete bridge supports near the K-96 ramp, according to the preliminary investigation. Emergency crews removed her from the SUV and attempted lifesaving measures, but she died at the scene. She was the vehicle’s only occupant.

While investigating the crash, deputies discovered a note containing information suggesting that a family member had been killed at a residence in the 200 block of North Mathewson Street.

Deputies contacted Wichita police and requested a welfare check at the address. Officers entered the home and found Patricia dead from multiple stab wounds. Two cats were also found dead inside the residence.

Based on preliminary evidence, detectives believe Devin killed her mother before leaving the home and later crashing the Nissan. Authorities have not publicly established a motive, and the circumstances surrounding both deaths remain under investigation.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation into the fatal crash, while the Wichita Police Department is investigating the suspected killing at the residence. The agencies are coordinating their investigations to establish the sequence of events leading to the deaths.

The case remains active, and authorities have said additional information will be released as it becomes available.
