COLUMBUS, OH. (THECOUNT) — Elijah Tompkins, 26, died shortly after midnight Thursday after being struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross South Hamilton Road on Columbus’ Southeast Side, according to police.
The fatal pedestrian crash occurred at approximately 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 23, near Blakestone Lane, Columbus police said.

Police said Tompkins was attempting to cross South Hamilton Road when he was struck by a southbound Chevrolet Silverado. Investigators said Tompkins crossed against a “don’t walk” signal while South Hamilton Road had a green traffic signal.
Drivers traveling eastbound on Blakestone Lane were stopped at a red light when the collision occurred. Those drivers reportedly witnessed the crash and provided information to police, according to a department news release.
Columbus emergency medical personnel transported Tompkins to Mount Carmel East Hospital in critical condition. He died at 12:13 a.m. Thursday, according to police.
The driver of the Chevrolet, identified only as an adult, remained at the scene until officers arrived. Police have not reported any arrests or criminal charges in connection with the collision.
The Columbus Police Accident Investigation Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. Authorities have not released additional information about the driver, the vehicle’s speed, or whether any other factors contributed to the collision.
