OK Woman Whitney Joplin ID’d As Victim In Wednesday Pittsburg County Fatal Crash

PITTSBURG COUNTY, OK. (THECOUNT)Whitney Joplin, 37, of McAlester, Oklahoma, has been identified as the woman who died Wednesday afternoon following a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 9 in Pittsburg County, according to authorities.

Shortly before 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 9, emergency crews responded to a crash along Highway 9 in Pittsburg County.

Investigators said a vehicle traveling eastbound on Highway 9 left the roadway to the right. The driver then overcorrected, causing the vehicle to travel back toward the roadway and collide with a westbound vehicle driven by Joplin.

Joplin suffered injuries in the collision and was pronounced dead as a result of those injuries.

A passenger traveling with Joplin was also injured in the crash. Authorities did not immediately release additional information concerning the passenger’s condition.

Investigators said another vehicle traveling westbound behind Joplin attempted to avoid the collision. That vehicle swerved and subsequently struck the rear of the first vehicle involved in the crash.

The circumstances surrounding the initial vehicle leaving the roadway remain under investigation. Authorities have not released additional information about possible contributing factors or whether any citations or charges are expected.

The investigation is ongoing, and additional details concerning the crash may be released as authorities continue reviewing the circumstances.

Pittsburg County is located in southeastern Oklahoma, with McAlester serving as the county seat. The county is part of the broader southeastern Oklahoma region.
