HUNTINGTON, IN. (THECOUNT) — Kaley D. Barnes, 43, of Huntington, Indiana, died Wednesday after the vehicle she was driving collided with the rear of a flatbed trailer attached to a semi-truck on State Road 9 just south of Huntington, according to the Huntington County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities said the semi was operated by another driver who was not reported injured.
Huntington is located in northeastern Indiana, approximately 25 miles southwest of Fort Wayne and about 105 miles northeast of downtown Indianapolis. The fatal crash occurred on State Road 9 near County Road 100 South shortly before 5 p.m. Wednesday.

According to the Huntington County Sheriff’s Office, Barnes was traveling southbound on State Road 9 in the passing lane when she approached a semi-truck pulling a flatbed trailer that was making a left turn onto County Road 100 South.
Investigators said Barnes did not see the turning truck in time and her vehicle struck the rear of the flatbed trailer. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but Barnes suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead. The Huntington County Coroner ruled her death accidental.
Authorities have not released the identity of the semi driver, and no citations or charges have been announced. Detectives continue working to determine all of the circumstances surrounding the collision.
According to information shared by colleagues and friends on social media, Barnes served as assistant principal at Lincoln Elementary School. The school community has begun mourning her loss, remembering her dedication to students, staff and families. Officials have not yet released a formal statement regarding her death.
The Huntington County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the crash. Additional information may be released as investigators complete their examination of the scene and review the evidence.
