BESSEMER, AL. (THECOUNT)Julian Green, 5, of Bessemer, Alabama, died Wednesday after suffering a gunshot wound in what investigators believe was an accidental shooting at a residence on Carolina Avenue, according to Bessemer Police. Authorities said a family member was involved in the incident and is cooperating with the investigation.

Bessemer is located in Jefferson County in north-central Alabama, southwest of Birmingham. The fatal shooting occurred in the 3000 block of Carolina Avenue shortly after midday Wednesday.

According to Bessemer Police, officers were dispatched to the residence at approximately 12:26 p.m. following a report of an accidental shooting involving a child. Police said officers arrived within one minute of receiving the emergency call.

Responding officers located Green outside the home suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Authorities immediately rendered aid before the child was transported to UAB Medical West for emergency treatment.

Despite lifesaving efforts, Green succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, according to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office, which later identified the victim.

Investigators said a family member was transported to police headquarters for questioning as detectives worked to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Based on the preliminary investigation, authorities believe the incident was accidental.

Bessemer Police said no criminal charges are anticipated at this time, though the investigation remains active as detectives continue reviewing the facts surrounding the child’s death.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office is assisting Bessemer Police with the ongoing investigation. Officials have not released additional information regarding how the child gained access to the firearm or who owned the weapon.
