Mathew James Russell ID’d As Victim In Sunday Phoenix Fatal Motorcycle Crash

PHOENIX, AZ. (THECOUNT) — Mathew James Russell, 33, has been identified as the victim of a fatal motorcycle crash Sunday night in north Phoenix, Arizona.

According to Phoenix police, officers were dispatched at approximately 9:30 p.m. to the area of the Interstate 17 Black Canyon Access Road and Deer Valley Road following reports of a motorcycle crash.

When officers arrived, they located Russell unresponsive at the scene.

Emergency responders transported Russell to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, authorities said.

Phoenix detectives responded to investigate the collision and determined that Russell had been operating the motorcycle on the freeway access road prior to the crash.

According to investigators, Russell was traveling at a high rate of speed when he failed to negotiate a turn and collided with a raised barrier.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash, police said.

The collision occurred near the intersection of the I-17 Black Canyon Access Road and Deer Valley Road in north Phoenix. The area serves as a major transportation corridor connecting residential neighborhoods, commercial developments, and freeway access points throughout the northern portion of the city.

Interstate 17 is one of Arizona’s principal north-south highways, extending from Phoenix through central and northern Arizona. The freeway carries significant commuter and commercial traffic and serves as a key route between the Phoenix metropolitan area and communities farther north.

Deer Valley Road is a major east-west arterial roadway in north Phoenix, providing access to residential communities, retail centers, business districts, and transportation infrastructure throughout the Deer Valley area.

Phoenix is the capital and largest city in Arizona and is the center of the state’s largest metropolitan region. The city maintains an extensive network of freeways, access roads, and surface streets serving millions of residents and visitors each year.

Police have not released additional information regarding the events leading up to the crash beyond the preliminary findings announced Sunday.

Authorities have also not released information regarding possible impairment, weather conditions, or any additional factors that may have contributed to the collision.

The investigation remains ongoing.
