DORAL, Fla. (THECOUNT) — Melanie Hyer, 46, a Florida Realtor, and her two daughters, Savannah Whiten, 11, and Sienna Whiten, 8, were found stabbed to death Tuesday night inside a home in Doral, a city in Miami-Dade County in South Florida, authorities confirmed.
Authorities also identified Ryan Charles Whiten, 42, Hyer’s ex-husband, among the four people found dead inside the residence. Detectives have stated they believe the deaths resulted from a murder-suicide; however, investigators have not publicly identified which individual they believe was responsible, nor have they confirmed who stabbed whom.
According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, officers responded shortly after 7:30 p.m. Tuesday to a residence in the gated Doral Isles community near Northwest 111th Court and Northwest 72nd Terrace after receiving a welfare-check request from a family friend.
Authorities said responding officers entered the home and discovered four individuals suffering from apparent stab wounds. All four were unresponsive.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel also responded to the scene and pronounced all four deceased.
Doral is located in western Miami-Dade County near Miami International Airport and is one of South Florida’s fastest-growing residential communities. The Doral Isles neighborhood is a gated residential development known for its family-oriented environment and extensive residential amenities.
The deaths have sent shockwaves through the local community. A representative for Downtown Doral Charter Schools confirmed that Savannah and Sienna were students at the school.
In a statement, the school said the community was mourning the loss of two beloved students and announced that grief counselors would be made available to support students and staff.
Doral Mayor Christi Fraga also issued a public statement, saying the tragedy was especially personal because she knew Hyer. Fraga described Hyer as a loving and dedicated mother and said the loss has deeply impacted the community.
Fraga further noted that the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing mental health, domestic violence, emotional wellness, and recognizing warning signs when individuals may be in crisis.
Neighbors and nearby parents expressed shock after learning of the deaths. Court records reviewed by local media indicate Hyer and Ryan Whiten had been divorced for several years.
Investigators have not announced a motive and have not released additional details regarding the circumstances leading up to the deaths. The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Homicide Bureau has assumed responsibility for the investigation.
Authorities said the case remains active and additional information is expected as detectives continue their work.
