Chicago Woman Tatiana Maxwell Arrested After Fatally Stabbing Infant Daughter

CHICAGO, IL. (THECOUNT) — Tatiana Maxwell, 25, has been charged with first-degree murder following the fatal stabbing of her infant daughter, Nyhnia Stovall, Friday morning in Chicago’s Gage Park neighborhood, according to authorities.

The incident occurred at approximately 7:20 a.m. Friday, May 16, in the 3000 block of West 59th Street on the city’s Southwest Side in Cook County, located in northeastern Illinois.

According to Chicago Police, officers responded to the residence after reports of a stabbing involving an infant child.

Authorities said the infant girl suffered a puncture wound to the chest.

Emergency responders transported Nyhnia to Comer Children’s Hospital for treatment.

Despite lifesaving efforts, the infant was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Investigators identified Maxwell, the child’s mother, as the suspect in the fatal stabbing.

Police said Maxwell was taken into custody at approximately 8:45 a.m. in the 5800 block of South Maryland Avenue.

Authorities stated Maxwell allegedly leapt from a second-floor window before officers apprehended her.

After being taken into custody, Maxwell was transported to the University of Chicago Hospital, where authorities said she was stabilized.

Chicago Police subsequently charged Maxwell with one felony count of first-degree murder and one felony count of murder with a strong probability of death or injury.

The fatal incident prompted a large police presence Friday morning in the Gage Park neighborhood as detectives and forensic investigators processed the scene.

Authorities have not publicly released information regarding a possible motive.

Investigators also have not disclosed additional details surrounding the circumstances leading up to the stabbing.

The case remains under active investigation by the Chicago Police Department.

Court information regarding Maxwell’s next scheduled appearance was not immediately available.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to conduct further examination related to the infant’s death.
