WESTMORELAND COUNTY, PA. (THECOUNT) — Mark Hixson, of Scottdale, Pennsylvania, has been identified as the victim in a fatal motorcycle crash Tuesday afternoon in East Huntingdon Township, according to authorities. Hixson was 71.
Hixson was killed after the three-wheeled motorcycle he was operating struck the rear of an SUV along Route 819 near Cedar Drive in Mt Pleasant.
The crash occurred shortly before 2:45 p.m. Tuesday in Westmoreland County, located southeast of Pittsburgh.
According to Westmoreland County Coroner John Ackerman, Hixson was traveling northbound on Route 819 when the collision occurred.
Authorities said the tri-wheeled motorcycle rear-ended an SUV near the Cedar Drive intersection for reasons that remain under investigation.
Hixson was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, according to the coroner’s office.
However, the impact caused him to be thrown from the motorcycle, and he struck the roadway.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and attempted to assist the victim following the collision.
Despite emergency response efforts, Hixson succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash.
He was pronounced dead by the Westmoreland County Coroner’s Office less than one hour after the collision.
Coroner Ackerman determined Hixson’s cause of death was blunt force trauma.
The manner of death was ruled accidental.
Authorities have not publicly released Hixson’s exact age.
The driver of the SUV involved in the collision has not been publicly identified by investigators.
Officials also have not released information regarding whether anyone inside the SUV sustained injuries.
Following the crash, Route 819 was shut down for an extended period while emergency crews and investigators worked at the scene.
The East Huntingdon Township Volunteer Fire Department stated the roadway remained closed for more than two hours between Fenton Road and Overholt Drive.
Motorists were advised to avoid the area and use alternate travel routes while crews cleared the wreckage and state police conducted the on-scene investigation.
Photographs and evidence were collected from the crash site as investigators worked to determine the events leading up to the fatal collision.
State police have not publicly stated whether speed, distraction, impairment, mechanical issues, or roadway conditions may have contributed to the crash.
No charges have been announced.
Authorities have not released additional details regarding the SUV or the specific model of the three-wheeled motorcycle involved in the crash.
Tri-wheeled motorcycles, commonly referred to as trikes, operate differently than traditional two-wheel motorcycles due to their wider rear stance and different handling characteristics.
The fatal collision remains under active investigation by Pennsylvania State Police and local authorities.
Additional information may be released as investigators continue reviewing evidence and witness statements connected to the crash.
