BERKELEY COUNTY, SC. (THECOUNT) — Gage Michael Ventry has been identified as the victim in a fatal motorcycle crash Wednesday afternoon in Berkeley County, South Carolina, according to officials.
Berkeley County Coroner Darnell Hartwell confirmed Thursday morning that Ventry, of Summerville, died from injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash on Sigma Drive in Summerville.
According to the coroner’s office, the collision occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. near the intersection of Sigma Drive and Cherry Street, an area within Berkeley County that includes a mix of residential and light commercial traffic patterns. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene following reports of a serious motorcycle crash.
Officials stated that Ventry was operating the motorcycle at the time of the incident. He was reportedly wearing a helmet when the crash occurred. Despite that precaution, he sustained fatal injuries and was later pronounced dead as a result of those injuries.
Authorities have not released details regarding the sequence of events leading up to the crash. It remains unclear whether another vehicle was involved or if the incident was a single-vehicle collision. Investigators have also not disclosed information related to speed, roadway conditions, or any other potential contributing factors.
Law enforcement officials temporarily closed Sigma Drive for several hours following the crash as they conducted an on-scene investigation. The closure allowed officers to document evidence, assess vehicle positioning, and ensure the roadway was safe before reopening it to traffic.
The area near Sigma Drive and Cherry Street is a local roadway network within Berkeley County, which is part of the greater Charleston-North Charleston metropolitan region. Roads in this area can experience varying traffic levels depending on time of day, with increased activity during afternoon hours when the crash reportedly occurred.
As is standard in fatal traffic incidents, investigators are expected to conduct a thorough review, which may include examining the motorcycle, reviewing any available surveillance footage, and speaking with potential witnesses. The findings of that investigation have not yet been released.
No additional information has been provided regarding possible citations, contributing circumstances, or whether impairment or mechanical issues are being considered. Authorities have indicated that the investigation remains ongoing.
Officials have also not released further personal details about Ventry beyond his identification and hometown. Information regarding funeral arrangements or services has not been made available at this time.
Motorcycle crashes, particularly those occurring on local roadways, continue to be a focus of traffic safety efforts across South Carolina. Investigators typically analyze multiple variables in such incidents, including visibility, speed, roadway design, and driver response, to determine the cause.
Anyone with information related to the crash is encouraged to contact local authorities as the investigation continues.
