MA Man Alan Scott ID’d As Victim In Friday Swansea Fatal Motorcycle Crash Involving Dump Truck

SWANSEA, MA. (THECOUNT) — Alan Scott has been identified as the Somerset, Massachusetts man killed after his three-wheel motorcycle collided with a dump truck on Route 6 in Swansea Friday morning, Massachusetts State Police reported.

Scott was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Scott was 67.

According to Massachusetts State Police, the crash occurred at approximately 8:20 a.m. on April 24 near Swansea Mall Drive on Route 6 — also known as Grand Army of the Republic Highway. Scott was riding a blue Can-Am Spyder Roadster motorcycle when it collided with a dump truck. Scott was found at the scene with life-threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Pieces of the motorcycle were scattered across the roadway, which was closed for several hours as investigators worked the scene. The dump truck operator was not injured.

The crash remains under investigation, and no charges have been announced.

A witness at a nearby shop who heard the collision told local media that first responders worked on Scott urgently before loading him into an ambulance. “They dragged him into the ambulance ASAP, they worked on him, the ambulance was there for a while,” the witness said.

Route 6 in Swansea — the Grand Army of the Republic Highway — is a major east-west commercial corridor running through the heart of the town, lined with retail centers, fast food establishments, and the Swansea Mall. The stretch near Swansea Mall Drive is a high-traffic zone with multiple intersections, driveways, and stop signs. A local resident near the scene described the area as prone to congestion and urged drivers to be aware of motorcyclists. “Be aware of the traffic congestion in the corner over there, drive the speed limit,” she told reporters. “There’s a lot of stop signs so there’s plenty of opportunities to slow down.”

Swansea is a town in Bristol County in southeastern Massachusetts, situated on the eastern shore of the Taunton River approximately 16 miles east of Providence, Rhode Island, and 50 miles south of Boston. The town had a population of approximately 16,200 as of the 2020 census. It borders Somerset to the east, Dighton and Rehoboth to the north, Seekonk to the northeast, and the Providence, Rhode Island, metro area to the west via the Barrington Bridge.

Somerset, where Scott resided, is a town in Bristol County directly east of Swansea along the eastern shore of the Taunton River. The two communities are connected by Route 6 and share the broader Fall River-New Bedford metropolitan area. Somerset had a population of approximately 18,500 as of the 2020 census and is home to the Brayton Point Commerce Center, a former power plant site being redeveloped as an offshore wind hub.

The Can-Am Spyder Roadster involved in the crash is a three-wheeled motorcycle produced by the Canadian manufacturer BRP. Unlike traditional two-wheelers, the Spyder features two wheels in front and one in the rear, giving it a more stable footprint. It is classified as a motorcycle under Massachusetts law and requires a motorcycle endorsement to operate.

Bristol County, where both Swansea and Somerset are located, is in southeastern Massachusetts and had a population of approximately 567,000 as of the 2020 census. The county seat is Taunton. The Fall River metropolitan area, which anchors the county’s southern portion, sits along the Rhode Island border and has a long industrial history centered on textile manufacturing.

Massachusetts State Police investigate all fatal crashes on state roadways. Swansea police have not stated what may have caused the crash, and it remains unclear whether the dump truck’s driver will face any charges.
