WHARTON, N.J. (THECOUNT) — Tisha Renee Hutchinson has been identified as the Piscataway, New Jersey woman killed in a Thursday crash that hospitalized three people — including two children. According to officials, the four-vehicle chain-reaction crash occurred on Interstate 80 westbound in Wharton Borough, Morris County, Thursday morning. Hutchinson was 39 years old.
According to investigators, Hutchinson was driving a Subaru SUV westbound on I-80 when an Audi SUV struck her vehicle from behind just after 8 a.m. The impact sent Hutchinson’s Subaru into the guardrail. The Audi continued forward and struck a Pontiac, which was then driven into a Chevrolet SUV by the force of the second collision.
The three occupants of the Audi — an adult driver and two children — were transported to a hospital for treatment of moderate injuries. No other injuries were reported across the four vehicles involved. The identities of the Audi’s occupants have not been released by authorities. No charges have been announced, and the crash remains under active investigation.
Milepost 34.5 on I-80 westbound in Wharton Borough sits near Exit 34, the interchange with New Jersey Route 15 — a major north-south connector serving communities including Wharton, Rockaway, and Jefferson Township. The stretch of I-80 near Exit 34 in Wharton has been among the most closely watched sections of the highway in recent years, following a series of sinkhole collapses in late 2024 and early 2025 that temporarily shut down both the eastbound and westbound lanes and prompted a state of emergency declaration by Governor Phil Murphy in March 2025.
Wharton Borough is a small municipality in western Morris County with a population of approximately 6,500. It is bordered by Roxbury Township to the west and north, Mine Hill Township to the east, and Mount Olive Township to the southwest. I-80 runs through the southern edge of the borough and serves as its principal highway connection to the greater New York City metropolitan area to the east and to Interstate 287 and points west.
Morris County is located in north-central New Jersey, roughly 30 miles west of Manhattan, and is one of the state’s wealthiest and most populous counties, home to approximately 510,000 residents. The county seat is Morristown. I-80 traverses the southern tier of the county, linking it to Bergen County and the George Washington Bridge to the east and to Warren County and the Delaware Water Gap to the west.
Piscataway, where Hutchinson resided, is a township in Middlesex County approximately 35 miles southeast of Wharton. It is home to Rutgers University’s main campus and had a population of approximately 57,000 as of the 2020 census. Piscataway borders New Brunswick to the northeast and sits along the Raritan River corridor in central New Jersey.
I-80 in New Jersey is one of the most heavily traveled east-west corridors in the northeastern United States, connecting the New Jersey Turnpike and the New York metropolitan area to the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area and Pennsylvania. The highway carries a substantial volume of commercial truck traffic alongside commuter and regional passenger vehicles, and morning rush hour between approximately 7 and 9 a.m. represents one of its highest-demand periods. Police have not released any information on the cause of the rear-end collision that triggered the chain-reaction crash. The New Jersey State Police Fatal Accident Investigation Unit handles fatal crashes on New Jersey state highways and routinely works in conjunction with local law enforcement on such investigations.
