Driver Killed Sunday in Multi-Vehicle Crash on D.C.-Area Federal Parkway; Three Others Hospitalized

PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, MD. (THECOUNT) — One person is dead and three others were injured after a three-vehicle crash on the southbound Baltimore-Washington Parkway near Greenbelt Road in Prince George’s County, Maryland, the United States Park Police confirmed early Sunday morning.

Federal officers responded to the crash on the southbound lanes of the parkway, north of Greenbelt Road, just minutes after midnight on Sunday, March 22, 2026. The identity of the person killed has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

Upon arrival, responders found the driver of one of the vehicles had been ejected during the crash. A United States Park Police helicopter transported the ejected driver to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver later died from those injuries.

Three occupants of a second vehicle were transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Two people inside a third vehicle were uninjured. No further information regarding the identities, ages, or residences of any of the parties involved has been released at this time.

As of Sunday morning, the southbound lanes of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway remained closed just south of Powder Mill Road. No timeline for the reopening of the roadway has been provided by authorities.

The Baltimore-Washington Parkway, designated Maryland Route 295 and also known as the B-W Parkway, is a major federal highway running approximately 29 miles between Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, Maryland. Unlike most highways, the parkway is owned and administered by the National Park Service, which gives the United States Park Police — rather than the Maryland State Police or Prince George’s County Police — full law enforcement jurisdiction over all incidents occurring on the roadway. The stretch of the parkway near Greenbelt Road is a heavily traveled corridor serving commuters, residents, and travelers moving between the two major metropolitan areas.

Prince George’s County is located immediately east of Washington, D.C., and is one of the most populous counties in Maryland, with approximately 950,000 residents. Greenbelt, the community nearest to the crash site, is home to NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and serves as a major suburban hub along the B-W Parkway corridor. The Greenbelt Road interchange is one of the busiest access points along this stretch of the parkway.

Ejection from a vehicle during a crash is among the most life-threatening outcomes in any traffic incident. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, occupants ejected from a vehicle are significantly more likely to sustain fatal injuries than those who remain inside. Seat belt use is the primary preventive factor against ejection in high-impact crashes.

The United States Park Police is leading the investigation into the crash. No charges or citations have been announced at this time. This story will be updated as additional information, including the identity of the deceased, becomes available.
