Sunday Maryland Crash Kills Two Men In Rockville

ROCKVILLE, MD. (THECOUNT) — Two men were killed and a third was seriously injured early Sunday morning when a vehicle crossed the median and overturned near the intersection of Norbeck Road and First Street in Rockville, Maryland, Montgomery County police confirmed. The names of the victims have not been released pending notification of next of kin.

Montgomery County police and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue responded to the single-vehicle crash at approximately 3 a.m. on Sunday, March 22, 2026. Upon arrival, officers found three men suffering from injuries. Two were pronounced dead at the scene. The third was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. His condition has not been updated.

According to a preliminary investigation, a gray 2025 BMW was traveling eastbound on Norbeck Road when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle crossed the median into the westbound lanes, left the roadway, and landed in a trench. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The Montgomery County Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is leading the investigation. Roads in the area were closed following the crash but reopened to traffic by approximately 9:40 a.m. Sunday morning.

Rockville is the county seat of Montgomery County, Maryland, located approximately 16 miles northwest of Washington, D.C. The city has a population of approximately 68,000 residents and serves as one of the largest municipalities in the state. Norbeck Road is a major east-west corridor in northern Rockville and the surrounding unincorporated communities of Montgomery County, connecting residential neighborhoods and commercial areas throughout the region.

Montgomery County is one of the most populous counties in Maryland, with approximately one million residents. It borders Washington, D.C., to the south and encompasses a mix of dense suburban communities, commercial corridors, and rural areas to the north. The county’s proximity to the nation’s capital makes it a major residential hub for federal workers, government contractors, and professionals employed throughout the greater Washington metropolitan area.

Single-vehicle crashes involving median crossovers are among the most deadly traffic incident types, particularly on divided roadways where vehicles traveling in opposing directions or fixed roadside hazards such as trenches, barriers, and embankments present significant collision risks. The circumstances of Sunday’s crash — a vehicle crossing from the eastbound lanes into the westbound lanes before leaving the roadway entirely — are consistent with a sudden loss of vehicle control, though the specific cause remains under investigation.

The Montgomery County Police Collision Reconstruction Unit specializes in the forensic analysis of serious and fatal traffic crashes, gathering physical evidence, vehicle data, and roadway measurements to reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to a collision. No timeline for the completion of the investigation has been provided by authorities.

No further information regarding the identities, ages, or residences of the victims has been released at this time. This story will be updated as additional information becomes available.
