AUSTIN, Texas (THECOUNT) — James Van Der Beek, the actor best known for starring as Dawson Leery in the hit late-1990s series Dawson’s Creek, has died, according to TMZ and confirmed by a representative from the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office. The report was received at 6:44 a.m. local time. He was 48.
No cause of death has been released, however, Van Der Beek had publicly battled stage 3 colorectal cancer, which he revealed in late 2024. Despite the serious diagnosis, he remained committed to raising awareness about cancer testing and research. In December 2024, he starred in a two-hour special of The Real Full Monty, aimed at promoting prostate, testicular, and colorectal cancer awareness.
His wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, shared a statement on Instagram following the news of his passing, writing that her husband “met his final days with courage, faith, and grace” and asking for privacy for their family during this difficult time.
Throughout his illness, Van Der Beek spoke openly about the role of faith and family in his life. He made a surprise virtual appearance at a Dawson’s Creek reunion in September 2025 after withdrawing from attending in person due to his health. During the event, he introduced Lin-Manuel Miranda, who read lines in his place.
Reflecting on his battle with cancer, Van Der Beek told reporters in December 2025 that the diagnosis had changed his perspective, encouraging him to live a healthier, more spiritual life. He expressed gratitude for the support of his wife and family throughout his fight against the disease.
James Van Der Beek rose to prominence as the titular character in Dawson’s Creek, which aired from 1998 to 2003 and became a defining teen drama of its era. The role made him a household name and earned him critical recognition for portraying complex teenage emotions.
Following Dawson’s Creek, Van Der Beek appeared in several feature films, including Scary Movie (2000), the teen drama Varsity Blues (1999), and the comedy series Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23. On television, he had recurring roles in high-profile shows such as How I Met Your Mother, One Tree Hill, and Pose, showcasing his versatility across drama and comedy.
Beyond his acting career, Van Der Beek was involved in charitable causes, particularly related to health awareness and youth mentorship. His participation in The Real Full Monty reflected a dedication to educating the public about cancer risks and early detection.
Van Der Beek was known among colleagues and fans for his approachable personality and willingness to speak candidly about his personal struggles, both on-screen and in interviews. His openness about mental and physical health issues earned him respect as an advocate for wellness in Hollywood.
James Van Der Beek is survived by his wife, Kimberly, and their six children: daughters Olivia, Annabel, Emilia, and Gwendolyn, and sons Joshua and Jeremiah. His passing leaves a lasting mark on the entertainment industry and the many lives he touched through his work and advocacy.
