JAC’D Guitarist Darrell ‘Dee’ Ball Killed In Sunday Stearns Kentucky Ejection Crash

LEXINGTON, KY. (THECOUNT) — Darrell Lee Ball, of Stearns, Kentucky, known to many across Central Kentucky as “Dee Ball,” a founding member and guitarist for the popular cover band JAC’D, has been identified as the man killed in an early Sunday morning ejection crash in McCreary County, according to Kentucky State Police Post 11.

Ball died hours after celebrating his 61st birthday.

Authorities said the fatal crash occurred Sunday, Feb. 8, along Wilburn K. Ross Highway. A preliminary investigation by Kentucky State Police indicated that Ball exited the right side of the roadway, causing his vehicle to overturn before striking a tree. Investigators said Ball was ejected from the vehicle during the crash.

Ball was pronounced dead at approximately 2:15 a.m. by the McCreary County Coroner’s Office. Kentucky State Police responded to the scene around 2 a.m. at the request of the McCreary County Sheriff’s Office. Trooper Derek Dennis is leading the ongoing investigation into the incident.

Darrell Lee Ball was widely known throughout the Louisville and Central Kentucky music scene as a founding member and guitarist for the popular cover band JAC’D. The band was known for performing high-energy rock hits spanning multiple decades and had built a strong following across the region through live performances at local venues and events.

Bandmates described Ball as the “rock” and “anchor” of JAC’D, crediting him with helping shape the group’s sound and longevity. Following the crash, members of the band shared a heartfelt tribute on the official JAC’D Facebook page, stating that “the world is a little darker without the light he gave us” and that their time together in the band was irreplaceable.

Friends and fans across Kentucky’s local music community have shared memories of Ball’s performances and presence at shows over the years. His involvement in the band made him a recognizable figure at venues throughout Louisville, Lexington, and surrounding counties where JAC’D frequently performed.

Authorities have not released additional details regarding possible contributing factors in the crash. Kentucky State Police emphasized that the investigation remains active as troopers continue to review evidence and scene findings to determine the full circumstances that led to the vehicle leaving the roadway.

Officials urge anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who has information that could assist investigators to contact Kentucky State Police Post 11.
