FL Man David Durham ID’d As Victim In Saturday Waverly Fatal Motorcycle Crash

WAVERLY, FL (THECOUNT) — David Durham, 35, has been identified as the man killed in a motorcycle crash Saturday in Waverly, Florida, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said Durham was driving a motorcycle westbound on Waverly Road at what appeared to be a speed above the posted 35 mph limit when a woman driving a Toyota Highlander eastbound on Waverly Road turned onto Hodge Street, crossing Durham’s path. The collision occurred mid-morning, and witnesses reported seeing the motorcycle collide with the SUV before Durham was thrown from his vehicle.

Upon impact, Durham was ejected from the motorcycle and came to rest approximately 75 feet from the point of impact. Police confirmed he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. First responders arrived quickly at the scene and found Durham unresponsive, with a bystander performing CPR before paramedics took over.

Durham was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The driver and two passengers of the Toyota Highlander were also taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Authorities confirmed all three occupants were wearing their seat belts. Police reported that none of their injuries appeared to be life-threatening, and all were expected to recover. Investigators at the scene conducted measurements and photographed the crash site, noting the final resting positions of the vehicles and debris from the collision.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office stated the investigation is ongoing. Officers are reviewing witness statements, traffic camera footage in the area, and any additional evidence collected at the scene. The circumstances of Durham’s speed and the actions of the SUV driver remain under review. Authorities have not released the name of the Highlander driver as the investigation continues.

Motorcycle crashes in Polk County have been a recurring concern for local law enforcement, with many incidents involving collisions at intersections or drivers failing to yield. Police officials continue to remind motorists and motorcyclists to obey posted speed limits, wear safety equipment, and exercise caution when approaching intersections to prevent similar tragedies.

Durham’s family has been notified of his passing. No further details regarding survivors or funeral arrangements have been released at this time.

The intersection of Waverly Road and Hodge Street has been the scene of multiple traffic accidents in recent years, prompting local authorities to consider enhanced signage and traffic monitoring in the area. Investigators said additional measures, such as speed enforcement and public awareness campaigns, are being evaluated to prevent future accidents.

Officials urge anyone with information about the crash to contact the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. Witnesses, residents in the area, or anyone with dashcam footage from the time of the incident are encouraged to come forward to aid in the investigation.
