STATESVILLE, N.C. (THECOUNT) — Michael Alan Gandy, of Statesville, North Carolina, has been identified as the victim in a fatal motorcycle crash Friday night in Iredell County, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
He was 57.
The collision occurred at approximately 8:20 p.m. on Whites Farm Road near Ingram Road in Statesville, a community located in Iredell County in western North Carolina. The area consists of a mix of residential and rural roadways commonly traveled by local commuters and through traffic.
Authorities said Gandy was operating a Kawasaki motorcycle northbound on Whites Farm Road at the time of the incident. According to investigators, a 17-year-old juvenile was traveling southbound on the same roadway in a Ford Edge SUV when the vehicle crossed the centerline.
Troopers reported that the Ford Edge entered the northbound lane and collided head-on with the motorcycle operated by Gandy. The impact resulted in fatal injuries to the motorcyclist.
Gandy was pronounced dead at the scene by responding officials. Emergency personnel responded to the crash location shortly after the incident was reported, but the injuries sustained in the collision were determined to be fatal.
The juvenile driver of the Ford Edge was not injured in the crash, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. Authorities have not released the identity of the juvenile due to age.
Investigators said impairment is not believed to be a factor in the crash. However, speed has been cited as a contributing factor in the collision, based on the preliminary findings of the investigation.
