Melissa Gilbert Weeps As Judge Rules Timothy Busfield Released From Custody [Video]

ALBUQUERQUE, NM. (THECOUNT.COM) — Actor Timothy Busfield has been released without bail following a court hearing that scrutinized child sexual abuse allegations involving two boys who were part of the cast of “The Cleaning Lady” in 2022.

Busfield, 68, and his attorney, Amber Fayerberg, appeared Tuesday before an Albuquerque judge for a hearing on pretrial detention. During the session, Fayerberg methodically addressed each accusation listed in the criminal complaint, highlighting key evidence that challenges the prosecution’s claims.

Prosecutors had alleged that Busfield engaged in inappropriate sexual conduct with the two children. Fayerberg countered this by presenting audio of an officer interviewing one of the boys, obtained by TMZ, in which the child stated that Busfield had never touched him inappropriately. She further noted that on-set teachers and multiple witnesses consistently reported seeing no misconduct during the filming of the series.

The defense also brought attention to statements in the criminal complaint regarding the mother of the boys. An actress on the set claimed that the mother had threatened Busfield, vowing revenge if her children were not brought back for the final season. Both children were ultimately not returned for the season. The defense argued this raises questions about potential motivation for the allegations.

Another point raised in court involved the father of the two boys, Ronald Rodis. He was identified in the prosecution’s pretrial motion and has a documented history as a disbarred attorney who pleaded guilty in 2016 to federal conspiracy and wire fraud. Busfield’s defense team highlighted this record, suggesting it could impact credibility and the motives behind the allegations.

Busfield’s wife, Melissa Gilbert, who was present in court, was reportedly emotional as the hearing unfolded. Gilbert has previously written a public letter to the judge, describing Busfield as her “love” and “rock” and requesting that he be protected while in custody. Her support underscored the personal toll the case has had on the family.

At the conclusion of Tuesday’s hearing, the judge ruled that Busfield could be released without bail, allowing him to leave the state while awaiting trial. He is required to comply with standard pretrial conditions, including appearing for all future court dates. The case remains ongoing, with the prosecution preparing its evidence for trial.

The situation has drawn attention from fans and media alike due to Busfield’s high-profile acting career. Known for roles in “The West Wing,” “thirtysomething,” and other television projects, Busfield’s involvement in a criminal case has sparked national coverage and extensive public interest.

The legal team emphasized that the evidence against Busfield, including statements from children and on-set witnesses, casts significant doubt on the allegations. Fayerberg argued that the accusations were motivated in part by parental frustration and potential retaliation, rather than factual occurrences. The court’s decision to release Busfield without bail reflects the judge’s consideration of these factors.

Authorities have confirmed that all investigative procedures are continuing, and any new evidence collected by Albuquerque Police Department or other law enforcement will be reviewed as part of the case. At this time, no additional charges have been filed, and the defense maintains that Busfield is cooperating fully with the investigation.

Busfield’s release has been met with both relief and scrutiny from the public. His attorney highlighted the importance of presumption of innocence while preparing for trial. As the legal process moves forward, the case remains under close observation by both the media and supporters of the actor.
