‘Why Was He Free?’ TX Man Clay Schumpert ID’d As Suspect In Monday Brenham Double Shooting

WASHINGTON COUNTY, TX. (THECOUNT) — Two family members — the father and sister of 36-year-old Clay Walker Schumpert — were rushed to the hospital Monday afternoon after being shot in a violent incident in Washington County, Texas. The shooting occurred despite the fact that Schumpert had previously been arrested in October 2025 on multiple felony drug charges and was still free at the time of the attack.

According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 3:45 p.m. to a home in the 9600 block of Old Independence Road in Brenham, after a caller — identified by authorities as Schumpert — reported that he had shot his father and sister.

When deputies arrived, they immediately located the victims and documented the extent of their injuries. The male victim, identified as Schumpert’s father, sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his upper torso. The female victim, identified as his sister, suffered a gunshot wound to her head. Both were treated on scene before medics transported them to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. No condition updates had been released at the time of this report.

Deputies then contacted Schumpert, who authorities say refused to comply with commands before eventually being detained. He was transported to the Washington County Jail, where he was booked on two counts of Aggravated Assault of a Date, Family or Household Member with a Weapon and three counts of Assault of a Public Servant.

The sheriff’s office confirmed that investigators are working the case with assistance from the Texas Rangers. A motive has not been released, and officials have not disclosed what led up to the shooting.

Schumpert’s criminal history has become a focal point of the case. In October, Brenham police arrested him after executing a search warrant tied to a marijuana distribution investigation. Officers reported seizing multiple illegal narcotics and drug paraphernalia during the search, resulting in several felony drug charges. That arrest stemmed from an investigation earlier in 2025 into suspected drug activity. Despite those charges, Schumpert remained out of custody leading up to Monday’s shooting.

As a result of the October arrest, Schumpert was charged with the following offenses in addition to an existing warrant:

• Possession of a Controlled Substance PG 2 (1 gram to 4 grams) – Third Degree Felony

• Possession of a Controlled Substance PG 2 (1 gram to 4 grams) – Third Degree Felony

• Possession of a Controlled Substance PG 2 (4 grams to 400 grams) – Second Degree Felony

• Possession of Marijuana (4 ounces to 5 pounds) – State Jail Felony

Authorities have not commented on his bond status, court restrictions, or the legal circumstances that allowed him to remain free despite the serious nature of the earlier felony case. Public records regarding his October 2025 arrest have not yet been fully detailed by officials, and local authorities have not addressed whether any pending hearings or probationary measures were in place.

Deputies continued processing the shooting scene throughout Monday evening, documenting evidence inside and outside the Old Independence Road property. Investigators also collected statements and reviewed information from the emergency call as they worked to establish a complete timeline of the incident.

As of Tuesday night, the sheriff’s office had not released further updates. The names of the victims have not been officially released, and authorities have not confirmed whether additional charges will be filed as the investigation progresses. The Texas Rangers are expected to continue assisting with forensic review and interviews as the case moves forward.
