ADA, OK. (THECOUNT) — An Ada teen has died after a motorcycle crash on State Highway 19 west of Ada in Pontotoc County Monday afternoon, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported. Joshua Wolfe was killed when his motorcycle collided with a vehicle at the intersection of SH-19 and County Road 3490. No one inside the other vehicle was injured.
Wolfe was 19 years old.
According to Oklahoma troopers, the crash occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m. on State Highway 19 at County Road 3490, west of Ada. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The OHP has not released further details, including the make of Wolfe’s motorcycle, the identity of the other vehicle’s driver, or the vehicle type involved in the collision.
Ada is the county seat of Pontotoc County in south-central Oklahoma, situated approximately 88 miles southeast of Oklahoma City, 122 miles southwest of Tulsa, and 133 miles north of Dallas. The city, with a population of approximately 16,500 as of the 2020 census, is the capital of the Chickasaw Nation and the home of East Central University. Ada is the dominant community within the Ada micropolitan statistical area, which encompasses all of Pontotoc County.
State Highway 19 is a primary east-west route across Pontotoc County, connecting Ada to communities to the west including Konawa and Wewoka in Seminole County. The highway traverses rolling hills and open rural terrain west of Ada, where the road passes through a mix of agricultural land and scattered residential development. County Road 3490 is a north-south rural connector in western Pontotoc County. The intersection where the crash occurred sits in an area where rural two-lane roads cross at grade without traffic signals, a common configuration across the region.
Pontotoc County covers approximately 725 square miles in south-central Oklahoma. As of the 2020 census, the county had a population of 38,065. It was created at statehood from part of the Chickasaw Nation in Indian Territory and takes its name from a historic Chickasaw tribal area in Mississippi — the word Pontotoc is generally translated as “cattail prairie” or “land of hanging grapes.” The Chickasaw Nation’s headquarters are located in Ada, making the county a significant center of tribal governance and services for the broader region.
Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers out of the OHP’s Troop B, based in McAlester, patrol Pontotoc County and investigate serious crashes on state highways within the county. The agency’s Fatal Accident Investigation Team handles cases involving fatalities on Oklahoma roadways.
Motorcycle fatalities account for a disproportionate share of traffic deaths in Oklahoma. The state’s rural highway network, which includes a large number of two-lane roads with open speed limits and at-grade intersections, presents particular hazards for motorcyclists. The OHP has not released information on whether Wolfe was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, nor whether speed or other factors are under review.
The crash remains under investigation by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. No charges have been announced.
Ada and its surrounding communities have seen a number of fatal crashes on rural highways in recent years, a pattern consistent with statewide trends. Oklahoma consistently ranks among the states with higher per-capita traffic fatality rates, driven in part by high rural highway speeds, long travel distances between communities, and a significant share of unrestrained occupants and impaired drivers involved in crashes. State Highway 19 west of Ada is a well-traveled corridor used by commuters, agricultural workers, and residents of Pontotoc and Seminole counties moving between Ada and western Oklahoma communities.
