A large-scale search and rescue operation is currently underway in the Pacific Ocean after a guest fell from Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Radiance on Wednesday evening.
The incident occurred approximately 35 nautical miles north of Ensenada, Mexico, as the ship was returning to its homeport of Long Beach, California, at the conclusion of a three-night Baja cruise.
Carnival Cruise Line confirmed the overboard alert in a statement to media outlets:
“The Carnival Radiance crew is responding to an overboard alert off the coast north of Ensenada, Mexico. The ship is returning to where there was a potential sighting of an individual in the water to conduct a rescue operation. … This is still a developing situation.”
Multiple passenger-submitted videos circulating on social media show the vessel’s rescue boats deployed and actively searching the area. One clip appears to capture a person in the water at a distance, though visibility and sea conditions are challenging.
Guests aboard the ship report that the individual had been standing near the aft railing on a lower deck watching a pod of dolphins shortly before the fall. The exact circumstances — whether accidental, intentional, or the result of a medical episode — remain under investigation.
The U.S. Coast Guard and Mexican Navy have been notified and are coordinating with the ship’s command team. Weather conditions at the time were moderate, with swells of 3–5 feet and winds around 15 knots — not considered extreme, but enough to make survival without immediate rescue difficult.
Carnival Radiance, a 101,509-gross-ton Spirit-class vessel carrying roughly 2,800 passengers and 1,100 crew on this sailing, immediately executed the industry-standard Williamson turn to return to the last known position.
This incident marks the latest in a string of high-profile overboard cases across the cruise industry. While statistically rare — roughly one per 500,000 passenger-days at sea — the survival window is brutally short. Water temperatures off Baja California in November typically range from 62–66 °F (16–19 °C), giving an conscious person roughly 2–6 hours before hypothermia sets in.
Carnival Cruise Line has experienced more documented overboard incidents than any other major operator since 2000, with at least 55 cases across its fleet during that period. The Radiance herself (previously Carnival Victory) has been linked to three prior fatal overboard events in 2008, 2017, and 2018.
Industry-wide, 2024 and 2025 have already seen at least 19 publicly reported man-overboard incidents, including fatal falls from Royal Caribbean, MSC, and Princess Cruises vessels. Despite mandates under the 2010 Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act requiring man-overboard detection systems, implementation remains inconsistent on older ships.
As of publication, the search remains active. The ship is expected to remain on scene until authorities officially suspend or conclude the operation.
Carnival has established a passenger care team on board to support guests and crew, and counseling services have been made available.
Further updates will be provided as official information is released by Carnival Cruise Line and the relevant flag-state and coastal authorities.
