FBI Confirms Terrorism In Bourbon Street Crash That Killed At Least 10 On New Year’s Day

NEW ORLEANS, LA. (THECOUNT) — The FBI has officially confirmed that the New Orleans attack, which resulted in the death of 10 individuals on New Year’s Day, is being investigated as an act of terrorism. The driver responsible for this heinous act is now deceased, following a police shootout after he drove a pickup truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter, injuring around 35 others.

The incident unfolded around 3:15 a.m. local time when the truck plowed through the area, leading to immediate chaos and loss. After crashing, the driver engaged in gunfire with law enforcement, which left two officers injured but in stable condition. The New Orleans Police Department confirmed the driver’s death during this confrontation.

The FBI’s statement marks a shift from earlier comments made during the morning press conference. Assistant Special Agent in Charge Alethea Duncan had initially stated that the incident was not a terrorist event.

New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Chief Anne Kirkpatrick described the driver’s actions as “very intentional,” emphasizing that this was not a case of driving under the influence but rather a deliberate act aimed at causing maximum harm. Kirkpatrick highlighted the driver’s “intentional mindset,” noting his actions to bypass barricades to execute his plan.

Details regarding the suspect remain undisclosed, with more information expected to be released in an update scheduled for 11 a.m. ET on Wednesday, Jan. 1.

This event has now been officially recognized by the FBI as an act of terrorism, prompting a comprehensive investigation into the motives and any possible affiliations of the attacker.
