BROOMFIELD, CO. (THECOUNT) — Aisha Yvonne Quest, 32, has been identified as the victim fatally shot during an active shooter situation at the Arista Flats apartments in Broomfield, Colorado, on Thursday, September 12, 2024. Broomfield Police responded to a disturbance call at the apartment complex, located near the 1stBank Center between U.S. 36 and Wadsworth Parkway, at approximately 6:30 a.m. The situation escalated quickly when Gregory Ryan Miles, 34, allegedly began making threats and shooting at surrounding units and into the parking lot.
Authorities described the incident as an active shooter situation, prompting them to issue a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents and evacuate some individuals from the building. Miles, who was armed and barricaded inside his apartment, fired several rounds both inside and outside his unit, heightening concerns for public safety.
Hostage Situation and Police Response:
As police arrived at the scene, the gravity of the situation became apparent. According to police spokeswoman Rachel Haslett, the authorities treated the incident as a critical threat. In addition to the gunfire coming from Miles’ unit, reports indicated that he was holding Quest hostage inside the apartment.
Over the course of several hours, police attempted to communicate with Miles to de-escalate the situation. However, by approximately 10 a.m., after continued gunfire and failed negotiations, the police made the decision to forcibly enter the apartment. Upon entering, they confronted Miles, who was shot by police during the encounter and immediately taken into custody.
Both Miles and Quest were transported to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, Quest, who had sustained a gunshot wound, later succumbed to her injuries. Broomfield Police confirmed her death on Friday, noting that the investigation is ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Suspect Identified and Charges:
Gregory Ryan Miles, the alleged shooter, remains hospitalized under police guard as he recovers from his injuries. On Friday, Broomfield Police publicly identified him and released a previous mugshot. Miles is under investigation for first-degree murder and other related charges. Authorities have not disclosed any prior criminal history for Miles but have stated that additional details will be released as the investigation unfolds.
At this time, police are working to determine the nature of the relationship between Miles and Quest. Though the incident is being treated as a domestic violence case, it remains unclear whether Miles and Quest were in a romantic relationship, roommates, or otherwise connected.
Community Response and Continued Investigation:
The Broomfield community has been deeply impacted by the tragic events at Arista Flats. Many residents expressed shock and sorrow as news of the shooting spread. Arista Flats management sent an email to residents on Thursday night acknowledging the severity of the situation and confirming that the shooting involved residents from the building.
“As you likely know, there was a domestic violence incident in our community early in the morning of Sept. 12, 2024, that involved a male resident firing shots inside and outside of a unit and injuring a female resident who resided in the same unit,” the email read. Management also assured residents that they were cooperating fully with law enforcement and enhancing security measures to protect the safety of the community.
Broomfield Police Chief Dan Lynch issued a statement offering condolences to Quest’s family and urging anyone with information to come forward. “This was a tragic loss of life, and our department is working diligently to investigate all aspects of this incident. Domestic violence is a serious issue, and we encourage anyone in similar situations to seek help before it reaches this level of violence,” Lynch said.
Addressing Domestic Violence:
Domestic violence continues to be a pervasive issue in the United States, with many cases escalating to fatal outcomes. According to data from the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV), about 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men experience severe intimate partner violence. Domestic violence often involves power, control, and the isolation of victims, making intervention difficult without external support.
The tragic death of Aisha Quest serves as a reminder of the deadly potential of domestic violence and the importance of early intervention. Local organizations in Broomfield, such as Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence (SPAN), offer resources and support for those affected by domestic violence. These organizations provide shelter, counseling, and legal assistance to survivors and work to prevent future violence in the community.
Moving Forward:
As the investigation continues, the Broomfield Police Department is urging anyone who may have witnessed the events leading up to the shooting or who has additional information about Miles and Quest to come forward. The police hope that further details will clarify the relationship between the suspect and the victim, helping to provide closure to Quest’s grieving family.
For now, the community remains focused on healing from the violent event and ensuring that such tragedies are prevented in the future. The Arista Flats apartments have enhanced security measures, and local residents are being offered counseling services to cope with the trauma.
Broomfield is a consolidated city and county located in the U.S. state of Colorado. It has a consolidated government which operates under Article XX, Sections 10–13 of the Constitution of the State of Colorado
