Firefighter Resigns Amid Death Threats Following Trump Rally Shooting Remarks

(SANBURY, PA. (THECOUNT) — Tony Bendele, a firefighter from Sunbury, PA, has resigned from his position after making highly insensitive remarks about the recent Trump rally shooting. The comments have not only cost him his job but have also led to severe backlash, including death threats against him and his family, according to Bendele.

The controversy began when Bendele expressed his discontent on social media that the bullet in the assassination attempt at a Trump rally missed its target. This egregious statement was made despite the fact that the bullet did strike Corey Caomperatore, a fellow firefighter and rally attendee, fatally wounding him.

The Incident

During a Trump rally, a shooter identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks from Pennsylvania fired multiple shots, aiming to assassinate the former President. Although Donald Trump was grazed by a bullet, it was Corey Caomperatore who suffered fatal injuries. The incident left the community in shock and mourning, especially within the firefighting fraternity.

Bendele’s Controversial Statement

In a now-deleted social media post, Bendele commented, “Too bad it didn’t hit him square [popcorn emoji]” This statement sparked immediate outrage, given that it came from someone in a profession dedicated to saving lives and protecting the public. The fact that Bendele, as a firefighter, could make such a callous remark about the death of a fellow firefighter was particularly appalling to many.

Backlash and Resignation

Following the public outcry, Bendele faced immense pressure from both the community and his colleagues. The backlash was swift and severe, with many calling for his resignation. Bendele, acknowledging the gravity of his statement, decided to step down from his position at the Sunbury firehouse.

In addition to losing his job, Bendele and his family have reportedly received numerous death threats. This development highlights the intense emotions and divisions that such a sensitive and tragic event can provoke.

Community Response

The firefighting community, known for its solidarity and mutual support, has been deeply affected by Bendele’s remarks. Fellow firefighters and community members have expressed their disgust and disappointment, emphasizing that such attitudes have no place in their profession. Many have rallied around the Caomperatore family, offering their condolences and support during this difficult time.

Moving Forward

While Bendele’s resignation might bring some closure to the immediate controversy, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of compassion and professionalism, especially in times of tragedy. The firefighting community continues to honor Corey Caomperatore’s memory, remembering him for his dedication and service.

The community is now focused on healing and supporting those affected by the tragedy, reaffirming their commitment to the values of bravery, compassion, and respect for all.
