According to reports, wood was operating a Chevy pickup truck on the 24000 block of US-87 in Canyon, when for unknown reasons, the vehicle crossed centerlines and exited the roadway around 6:30 a.m. Sunday. The vehicle then came into contact with a substantial tree.

Wood was transported to an area hospital with what are believed to be life-threatening injuries.

Anderson was pronounced dead at the scene of blunt force trauma injuries.

Friends and family members remembered Anderson in a Facebook post Sunday evening:

Brokenhearted to get word that we’ve lost another talented young cowboy. That’s 16-year-old Clayton Anderson of Clarendon, Texas, standing between his little brothers, Chance and Caden. Clayton headed to Heaven this morning after a horrific road accident that has his friend Trent Wood in a hospital in critical condition.

Clayton just claimed the reserve Texas High School Rodeo Association Reined Cow Horse Title, and was supposed to represent the Lone Star State at next month’s NHSRA Finals in Gillette. He’s also a team roper, and by all accounts a great kid and hero to his little brothers. Clayton and Chance share a birthday, and were also supposed to be celebrating another year together next month.

Clayton’s mom and dad, Annie and Kyle, are in Perry, Georgia with Chance and Caden right now for the National Junior High Finals Rodeo, as Chance is the 2022 THSRA Junior High Saddle Bronc Steer RIding Champ. No dad should get this call on Father’s Day or any other.

Prayers for Annie, Kyle, Chance and Caden, and Clayton’s countless cowboy friends from your very sad rodeo family. Prayers for Trent and the Wood family for a full recovery. So much love to every single one of you on this impossibly sad Sunday.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
