PHUKET, THAILAND. (THECOUNT) — Vietnamese man, Ho Hoang Hung, was rescued at sea after attempting to row a rubber dinghy 1,240 miles from Thailand to India to see his wife that he had been separated from over COVID mandates.
Hung, 37, was rescued off the coast of Thailand after he had set off from Phuket, Thailand to Mumbai, India equipped only with water and instant noodles. The craft possessed no navigation system of any kind.
According to reports, Hung planned to cross the Bay of Bengal just before the start of the cyclone season.
Hung traveled about 50 miles off Thai coast before being spotted by a fishing boat near the Similan Islands on Wednesday.
He was then rescued and taken into protective custody.
Hung told officials he was trying to reach his wife, who was working in Mumbai, India.

Captain Pichet Songtan, from the Thai Maritime Enforcement Command Centre, said Ho had been separated from his wife for two years due to Covid travel restrictions and was trying to reach her by other means.
Pichet said the man was found with no map, compass, GPS or change of clothes and only a limited amount of water.
