CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, MO. (THECOUNT) — Shayleigh Smith, of Jackson, Missouri, has been identified as the victim in a Saturday double-fatal vehicle crash and pedestrian strike in Cape Girardeau County.
Smith, 18, and a 16-year-old from Hayti, were both killed early Saturday morning during a vehicle crash near Oak Ridge.
According to reports, Smith and the other teen were standing near their disabled Mazda 6 on Interstate 55 near the Little Apple Creek bridge, when the Mazda and the teens were struck by a Ford F150 driven by Edward Lee of Memphis.
Smith was pronounced dead 2:15 a.m. on Saturday. The unidentified juvenile was pronounced dead at 2:30 a.m.
The cause of the deadly incident remains under investigation.
