NASHVILLE, TN. (THECOUNT) — James Irvin Mercer, of Springfield, Tennessee, has been identified as the victim fatally struck by a train in Nashville Tuesday morning.

Mercer, 22, was killed after he was struck by a passing train in Nashville on Tuesday.

According to police, Mercer was on-foot and walking on the tracks when he was fatally struck in the area of the Riverfront Park train station and Anthes Drive Tuesday around 7:30 a.m.

The conductor activated the horn and emergency braking system, however, Mercer, who was apparently wearing earbuds, was pronounced dead at the scene of blunt force trauma injuries.

The conductor told police that victim, “had his head down, did not look up, or take evasive action.”

The cause of the deadly incident remains under investigation.
