BIRMINGHAM, AL. (THECOUNT) — A Birmingham police officer was shot multiple times while responding to reports of a robber in progress Sunday morning, according to reports.

The officer, who has not been identified, was shot twice in the stomach area and once in the arm, police say.

Birmingham PD say they are searching for a pair of suspects after a police officer was shot three times, police report on Sunday morning.

Around 9:20 a.m., police received a call about a robbery near 53rd Street North and Georgia Road. Once officers arrived at the location of the incident, the officer confronted one of the suspects. That is when the suspect began to fire gunshots at the officer, Birmingham Police Chief Patrick Smith said in a brief news conference Sunday morning, reports CBS42.

Two suspects fled the scene after the shooting and authorities are searching for them at this time. Birmingham police have marked off a perimeter in the area where they believe the suspects may be hiding.

There are multiple units involved in this investigation, including K9.

The police officer injured in this shooting has worked for the Birmingham Police Department for 15 years.

The wounded officer was transported to an area hospital. His condition was not immediately provided.
