ASHEBORO, NC. (THECOUNT) — Pilot Bryan Andrew Manzer, of Asheboro and Steven Neil Lewis, of Liberty, have been identified as the North Carolina victims in an Asheboro plane crash Friday night, according to reports.
According to the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, Manzer, 61, and his 30-year-old passenger, Lewis, were said to be on the small plane that crashed into a wooded area in Asheboro Friday night. The crash prompted an overnight search that led authorities to find the wrecked plane with the pilot and passenger dead.
The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office confirmed there were no survivors in a press conference on Saturday afternoon, just hours after search crews located the plane’s wreckage on private property off Cedar Rock Mountain Road.
”No fire was involved. The plane was in one area. It was very much annihilated,” said Randolph County Sheriff Gregory Seabolt, reports WFMY.
At the time of the crash, there was a Southwest Randolph High School football game going on nearby. Reports from the scene said students, staff and other attendees of the game watched in horror as the plane began making loud noises and started to lose altitude. The plane then circled lower and lower while spiraling down toward the trees before coming into contact with the ground.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
