DENHAM SPRINGS, LA. (THECOUNT) — Former Louisiana Sen. Heulette “Clo” Fontenot Jr. has been identified as the victim in a fatal head-on vehicle crash Sunday morning, according to reports.

Fontenot, 58, was killed in a vehicle crash Sunday morning after, for unknown reasons, he drove into the path of oncoming traffic, according to State Police.

Authorities say, Fontenot, of Denham Springs, failed to yield for an oncoming Lexus while making a left turn around 11:30 a.m. on LA 63. Police said the Lexus struck the passenger side of Fontenot’s car.

Fontenot was transported to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead of multiple blunt force trauma injuries.

Police said Fontenot wasn’t wearing a seat belt.

Officials were still reviewing how the crash happened, reports TheAdvocate.

Fontenot, a Republican, served 12 years in the Legislature until he retired from state politics in 2007.
