MN Businessman Irwin Jacobs Death Ruled ‘Suicide’ Wife’s Death Ruled ‘Homicide’

HENNEPIN COUNTY, MN. (THECOUNT) — Well-known Twin Cities businessman Irwin Jacobs, died as a result of committing suicide, while ruling the death of his wife Alexandra a homicide, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner has determined.

Jacobs and his wife Alexandra, were identified as the couple found dead at a home in Orono, MN, Wednesday.

Jacobs, a prominent Twin Cities businessman also known as, “Irv the Liquidator” for his aggressive business practices, was found dead along with his wife, after police responded to their Lake Minnetonka-area home, located at, 1700 Shoreline Drive in Orono, at just after 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Orono police say they found the bodies of a male and a female at the home. Dispatch audio that KARE 11 obtained from Broadcastify states that responders “found two people on the bed,” reports ValleyNewsLive.

Police say there is no risk to the public. The bodies have not yet been identified and investigators are processing the scene.

Jacobs founded COMB (“Close-out Merchandise Buyers”), a catalog-based mail-order retailer. In 1986, COMB and several cable television operators created the Cable Value Network (CVN), a pioneering television shopping channel which was later purchased by Joseph Segel QVC.

In 1985, Jacobs was billed a “Minneapolis takeover artist” by Fortune. But the Wall Street deal-maker later found a new love in the boat business, starting Larson Boats in Little Falls and growing that into a world-wide network of companies.

His Genmar Holdings became one of the country’s biggest boatbuilders, and filed for bankruptcy in 2009.

Irwin currently owned several businesses.
