Report: Tony Romo To Rejoin Cowboys As QB After Says ‘So Long’ To Gravy CBS Gig

DALLAS, TX. (THECOUNT) — If the rumors are true, 38-year old Tony Romo is headed back to the Dallas Cowboys as a quarterback just as Dak Prescott enters the final season of his rookie contract. Romo was also in the find year of his contract, with CBS.

The last time Romo was on a football field as the quarterback was January 1, 2017. Since then, the 14-year veteran passer has transitioned to a successful broadcasting career as a commentator for CBS. But it was recently reported that Romo’s representatives were looking for a contract extension for a record $10 million a year. That didn’t happen.

Romo is currently in the midst of a three-year deal with CBS that pays him $4 million a year and runs through the end of the 2019 NFL season. The idea was floated that the former quarterback may decide to walk away from the booth completely if he didn’t receive a new extended contract. And now, that appears to be the case, reports TheLandryHat.

According to an unnamed source, Romo and the Cowboys have had discussions for several weeks about a possible return to the team. While many seem to believe he’d return to Dallas eventually as a coach, rumors actually point to him returning as a player.

This is exactly what happened with tight end Jason Witten back in February. The 36-year old Witten retired from the NFL last May after being offered the color commentary seat on ESPN’s legendary Monday Night Football broadcast. But after receiving heavy criticism for his performance in the booth last season, Witten elected to unretire and rejoin the Cowboys as a player.

Now it appears Romo will follow the same path as Witten.

Prescott replaced an injured Romo during his rookie season back in 2016. And Dak proceeded to lead the Cowboys to a 13-3 record, including an impressive 11-game winning streak. Prescott played so well, when Romo was finally healthy enough to return, the Cowboys elected to stick with the rookie passer ultimately ending Tony’s career.

Developing.
