JOHNSTON COUNTY, NC. (THECOUNT) — Brock Currens, a Four Oaks Fire volunteer firefighter and student at South Johnston High School, has been killed in an ATV accident in Benson, North Carolina.
Currens, 17, was traveling on an ATV to a fire when the fatal crash occurred during a North Carolina “Galot Crash Derby” racing event, reports say.
Currens was riding at the Galot Motorsports Park in Johnston County, according to the Four Oaks Fire Department.
The victim was landing the ATV after performing a jump, when for unknown reasons, he slammed on the brakes and was launched over the handrails landing on his head.
Currens was transported to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead of traumatic blunt force trauma brain injuries.
“Brock will be missed by everyone,” the fire department said in a Facebook post. “I ask that you please keep in your prayers Rhonda and Anthony Lee as well Michael Currens. Please pray for our fire family as we try to heal,” reports MyFox8.
The teenager was an avid fisherman who loved the outdoors and making his truck louder, according to Four Oaks Fire.
