Sorry Twitter, That’s NOT A “White Power” Hand Sign The Covington Catholic HS Kids Are Flashing

COVINGTON, KY. (THECOUNT) — An image floating around on Twitter claims to depict the Covington Kentucky Catholic kids flashing a symbol associated with white power. There’s just one little problem, it’s not. OK, that’s a big problem. The kids are actually in the process of celebrating a fellow basketball player’s 3 point shot. A practice common with college and NBA players alike.

Officials were forced to shutter all school and activities for students at Covington Catholic High School Tuesday, citing safety concerns, after a video surfaced purporting to show a group of teens harassing an elderly Native American man.

The decision to close the school was announced in a system-wide call to parents from Covington Catholic Principal Bob Rowe.

Rowe said the decision comes after meeting with local authorities about the safety of students, faculty and staff following a controversy surrounding video showing the students in an encounter with Native Americans at a rally near the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Principal Rowe said all activities on campus for the entire day have also been canceled and students, faculty and staff are “not to be on campus for any reason.”

He ended the call by asking parents to “keep the Covington Catholic Community in your prayers,” source.

Two Covington Catholic High School students released a video statement Monday evening describing various alleged threats against them and the school after a video went viral, reports dailybeast.

“There have been many threats against our lives, against our parents. Some of these include that we should be locked in the school and it should be burned to the ground, the school being bombed, school shooting threats,” Sam Schroder, a senior at Covington Catholic, said in a video statement tweeted out by conservative high-school online personality CJ Pearson.
