OR Holocaust Survivor Featured On KATU ID’d As Hillsboro Pedestrian Killed Tuesday

HILLSBORO, OR. (THECOUNT) — Alter Wiener, the Holocaust survivor recently featured in an interview with KATU News, has been identified as the pedestrian struck and killed Tuesday night in Hillsboro.

Wiener, 92, was struck and killed by a vehicle in Hillsboro Tuesday night after a driver struck him near NE Century and NE Brighton shortly before 5 p.m.

Weiner survived a concentration camp in Germany, but his entire family was killed by Nazis.

“When my father was murdered by the Germans, I was 13 years old,” Alter said in a previous interview with KATU News. “When I was taken to a concentration camp, I was 15 years old.”

He was one of only a few Holocaust survivors still living in the Portland area.

Later in live, Weiner dedicated his time to sharing is life story with audiences at universities, colleges, middle schools, high schools, churches, synagogues, and prisons. His life is documented in the memoir, “From a Name to a Number.”

Despite all his suffering, hate never found its way into Alter’s heart. Only love, reported KATU.

“We are all equal,” Alter says. “Give everybody a chance.”

Hillsboro is the fifth-largest city in the State of Oregon and is the county seat of Washington County. Lying in the Tualatin Valley on the west side of the Portland metropolitan area, the city hosts many high-technology companies, such as Intel, that comprise what has become known as the Silicon Forest, according to Wikipedia.
